Dawn Shay, RYT 500, began practicing yoga in 2000 to restore her
body, mind, and spirit after an illness. Dawn enjoys sharing the
transformational and healing power of yoga and has been teaching since
2003. Her struggles and triumphs fuel her passion to bring yoga to
everyone, especially those struggling with illness, injuries and the bumps
and bruises of everyday life. A strong sense of family keeps her
grounded and surrounded by love. She has 2 fabulous daughters –
Amber & Kelli who have always believed in their somewhat wacky, always
slightly out-of-step mother. They have given her the greatest treasures
in her life – her two grandchildren – Alanna & Braeden. She has learned
more about life & yoga from them, than from anyone! Her biggest fan,
rock, anchor, confidant and best friend is her husband Sam. He has
always given her the love, space and support to grow and flourish.
After a couple of years of declining health – fatigue, headaches, and low
energy, she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C at the age of 41. After 6
months of successful treatment, the virus was undetectable, but she was
broken mentally and physically - too weak & winded to even climb a flight
of stairs. Always an athlete and competitor – swimmer, body builder,
triathlete, she knew there had to be something that would help restore
her. Normal aerobic exercise seemed too jarring so she gave yoga a try.
She couldn’t do much in that first class, but left it feeling better than she
had in a long, long time. Her health & spirit were both restored over time
with the practice of yoga.
She was initially attracted to Ashtanga yoga and was trained as a
teacher by Beryl Bender Birch in this discipline in 2003/2004. At
the same time, she was also studying and practicing Anusara®
yoga & its uplifting message of “life is good” and “all of your
imperfections are part of your perfection” connected with her
deeply. In 2004/2005 she took her first Anusara® teacher
training with Betsey Downing. She completed Level I teacher
training in 2005 with John Friend and most recently completed
Anusara® Therapy Training and Therapeutic Adjustments. She is
an Anusara-Inspired™ Instructor and is working towards her full
Anusara®certification. Dawn has logged more than 1,000 hours
of Anusara® workshops, trainings and classes.
Everything she has gone through has only made her stronger & more
compassionate to the struggle of others. There were many labels that
could she could have let define and limit her – “pregnant teen”, “single
mom”, “victim & survivor of domestic violence”, “depressed”, but she
always knew she was so much more. With yoga, she was able to let her
spirit soar. Dawn continues to study, expand, grow and “enjoy the ride”
of life.
Her “mission” is to inspire others
to believe in their true self
to see their own intrinsic beauty
to connect with the divine within themselves
and to shine their own light brightly through the practice of yoga!
